So We Could Dance

This hanging window piece is titled after the gospel single Shackles, by Mary Mary. As one would look above them, they see names of queer icons, and their lost belongings on the club floor.

These icons have done their lifetimes work, to set us all free, to dance, to have joy once again. Many queer folks omit the labor of their elders. They forget how the labor of Black queers has blossomed into leniencies and ease the community would otherwise never have seen.

Liberation is life’s work. Freedom is life's work. A life we want is always a life we cannot reach, until we fight to break ourselves free. This window is the portal between freedom and perceived bondage.
